CLIMATE AND WEATHER FORECASTS

The weather forecasts play a really important role at a total solar eclipse. Climate statistics by which the probability of cloud cover can be determined for a certain region at a certain time are an essential aid for travel planning. Do you remember 1999? The professionals did not even consider Central Europe as an observation area because of the high probability of cloud cover. Instead they travelled to Bulgaria or Turkey and got rewarded with a clear sky.
For the solar eclipse of 2008 August 01, the experts of the NASA did also analyse the weather dates of many years’ standing and publish them in a form which is easy to understand. The maps, diagrams and tables, which were prapared by Fred Espenak & Jay Anderson, give a good impression of the climatic facts.

Rather good chances of having a clear sky (comparable to As Sallum / Egypt in 2006) are given in the region along the border between Mongolia and China.

Wetter

Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get. Therefore it is important to follow the weather forecasts at short notice for changing the place of observation if necessary - if you are appropriately mobile. Modern ships for example can communicate with weather stations via satellite broadcasting. But you should realise that at the solar eclipse of 2008 August 01 there won`t be many alternatives because of the geographic situation at the destinations.

In spite of all uncertainties, that are even attached to weather forecasts at short notice, no eclipse chaser reasonably wants to do without it. You will find links to the current weather forecasts for the Arctic as well as for Russia and China on this site from the beginning of 2008.
